John Bagley Music Trust
Supporting the Future of Musical Arts
Music shaped John Bagley’s life from an early age and remained his enduring passion throughout it. The John Bagley Music Trust has been established to honour that lifelong commitment by supporting the continued growth, appreciation and accessibility of musical arts for future generations.
Rooted in Nottinghamshire and inspired by a life devoted to classical music, the Trust exists to encourage musical talent, cultural enrichment and artistic opportunity.
A Life Devoted to Music
Born in Ruddington and raised in West Bridgford, John Bagley discovered classical music during the war years while attending concerts in Nottingham with a neighbour. That experience sparked a passion that would define the rest of his life.
At Tonbridge School in Kent, John became an accomplished pianist and proudly conducted the school orchestra. Although he later built a highly successful career as a Chartered Surveyor and senior partner in his family’s practice, music remained at the centre of his world.
John possessed an extraordinary knowledge of classical music and amassed a vast collection of historic recordings over many decades. He became deeply involved with the Nottingham Music Society, helping organise recitals by internationally renowned performers and welcoming artists from across the UK and Europe.
In retirement, John immersed himself further in the world of music, opera and performance — travelling extensively to festivals and concerts, particularly the Edinburgh Festival and productions in London. His enthusiasm, intellect and sharp wit stayed with him throughout his life.
John passed away peacefully at home on 15 May 2023, listening to the music he loved so deeply.
